Exploration of Massimo Vignelli's Design

Massimo Vignelli believed in simplicity, timelessness, and functionality. His systematic approach, use of strict grids, limited color palettes, and typographic discipline created enduring designs across disciplines.
By studying his major works—such as the NYC Subway Map, the Unigrid System, and corporate identities like American Airlines and Knoll—I developed a deeper understanding of how clarity and structure can elevate communication.
Main Takeaways
Grid-based Structure
A grid is not just a background tool; it defines the hierarchy, aligns content, and creates a sense of balance across all visual elements.
Minimalist Color Palette
Vignelli preferred working with a limited set of colors—often primary colors or black, white, and one accent—believing that fewer colors result in a stronger, more unified visual identity.
Typography Restraint
Vignelli advocated for using a small number of typefaces, selected for their clarity and timeless quality.
Universality and Timelessness
Whether designing a book, a subway map, or a logo, the same fundamental principles of clarity, function, and simplicity always applied.
Project Concept
Noir Notes is a newly established record label deeply rooted in the timeless tradition of jazz. The name "Noir" evokes the moody, late-night ambiance of classic jazz clubs, while "Notes" references both musical notation and the introspective, poetic nature of jazz compositions.
Our goal was to create a strong, cohesive identity that reflects the depth, rhythm, and elegance of jazz—while staying true to Vignelli’s modernist principles.
Moodboard

Color
The primary color is a deep blue, symbolizing sophistication and stability. Warm, muted secondary colors complement the palette, reflecting the richness and emotional range of jazz.
The Brand
Logo Design

The logo is a monogram of two "N", structured on a precise grid. Diagonal cuts introduce a sense of movement and rhythm, echoing the improvisational flow of jazz. The minimalistic form ensures clarity, scalability, and versatility across applications.
